Argentine Side of Iguazu Falls

Located in the northeastern part of Argentina, in the Misiones region, the Argentine Falls unfold along the border with Brazil

In this post, you will discover all the details that make both the Brazilian and Argentine sides of the Iguazu Falls uniquely astonishing.

To begin with, let’s provide some definitions and clarifications about this true masterpiece of Mother Nature.

In this read, you will indulge in an abundance of information and nuances, with a special focus on the Argentine portion of this natural spectacle.

And that’s not all! We will also unveil how the journey unfolds and the extent of each route that takes you to various stunning observation points.

The Argentine Falls, along with the Brazilian side, boast the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site and, since 2011, have been included in the list of the New Seven Wonders of Nature.

Spanning an immense arc of 2.7 kilometers in width, the Iguazu National Park houses 275 unique waterfalls that skirt an impressive horseshoe-shaped cliff.

The iconic Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat) is the most spectacular waterfall. An observation platform provides the opportunity to witness the power of the water plunging from the river and plummeting into an 80-meter abyss.

Beyond the magnificent falls, the park is a true sanctuary for biodiversity, home to over 2,000 plant species, approximately 450 bird species, and a wide variety of mammals.

Don’t be surprised if you encounter alligators, otters, coatis, and monkeys during your visit! Although rarer, it is also possible to spot jaguars in the area.

The area is home to half of Argentina’s bird species, including exotic parrots and toucans.

While exploring the Argentine Falls, you can venture along winding trails that cut through the park’s rainforest, feeling the full energy of the rushing waters.

Unlike the Brazilian side, which features just one main trail, the Argentine side takes pride in offering three main trails for visitors.

The Brazilian side of the Iguazu Falls offers complete panoramic and frontal views of the various waterfalls.

On the other hand, the Argentine side offers a more intimate connection with the falls, although the complete panoramic view of all of them is reserved for the Brazilian side.

The Spanish explorer Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca was the first European to be enchanted by the Iguazu Falls, in the distant year of 1541.

The National Park housing the Iguazu Falls – Argentina was established on October 8, 1934, covering a vast area of 676.2 square kilometers.

The prestigious title of UNESCO World Heritage Site, granted to the Iguazu Falls – Argentina, was received in 1984, further reaffirming the importance and beauty of this natural paradise.

Discovering the Must-See Trails of the Argentine Falls

As mentioned earlier, the Argentine Falls, in contrast to the Brazilian side, feature three main trails to explore. These are:

  1. “Devil’s Throat (the main trail)”
  2. “Upper Circuit”
  3. “Lower Circuit”

Upon arriving at Argentina’s most frequented national park, located in the far north of the Misiones province, we are welcomed by the visitor center.

Iguazu National Park opens its doors at 8 in the morning, and the tip is to arrive early! After all, there are numerous walkways, and each deserves to be appreciated leisurely, promising many incredible photo opportunities.

It’s important to wear comfortable clothing and footwear, and to bring food and drinks for the entire day, even though there are restaurants on-site – which might be a bit pricey.

From the visitor center, all trails in the park can be explored on foot or aboard a charming eco-friendly train, which departs every 30 minutes and is free of charge!

The only trail that requires the use of the eco-friendly train is the path to the main trail of the Iguazu Falls – Argentina. This route stretches for approximately 2500 meters up to the beginning of the walkway.

The train begins its journey at the central station, located close to the service area. The intermediate station, named ‘Cataratas,’ provides access to the upper and lower trails, and the journey concludes at the Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat) station.

Alternatively, you can choose the Green Trail (Sendero Verde), a route located 500 meters from the park’s entrance. This walk takes about 10 minutes and is available until 5 PM.

This trail cuts through the subtropical jungle, offering a pleasant on-foot access from the service area to the Cataratas station and the beginning of the Upper and Lower Walks.

Devil's Throat: The Unmissable Trail at Iguazu Falls - Argentina

The tour of Devil’s Throat takes approximately 120 minutes, covering a total distance of 2,200 meters, considering both ways.

At the end of the walkway, you encounter the viewpoint of the Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat), the largest and most impressive of all the waterfalls.

Imagine waterfalls that extend for over 150 meters, plunging from a height of more than 82 meters – the equivalent of a 30-story building!

The horseshoe-shaped waterfall has an average flow of 1,800 cubic meters per second, enough to fill 36 Olympic-sized swimming pools in just one minute.

This imposing spectacle of nature attracts visitors from all over the world, and the best part is that its accessibility is 100%.

Lower Circuit: A Surprising Adventure at the Argentine Falls

The Lower Walk leads you through walkways immersed in the jungle, offering an intense nature experience. You’ll be accompanied by various species of butterflies, birds, and coatis during this incredible exploration of the waterfalls.

This trail stretches for 1,700 meters and provides direct contact with lush vegetation and several viewpoints, perfect for admiring the waterfalls.

This trail provides an intimate connection with nature, bringing the wonders of the place within reach of your hands.

The entire circuit route takes approximately 90 minutes and is located 500 meters from the Cataratas station.

Furthermore, near the entrance, you can find restroom facilities and a food court.

The trail has 90% accessibility, featuring walkways and some stairs.

Upper Circuit: Admiring Iguazu Falls - Argentina from Top to Bottom

We continue to the Upper Circuit, which invites us to a stroll along flat walkways with a breathtaking panoramic view of the Upper Iguazu Falls.

From this point, we delight in a fascinating scenery, filled with distinct viewpoints, from which we can capture incredible photos from the top of the waterfalls.

Each panorama is unique, and the combination of lush vegetation and majestic waterfalls creates a dream-worthy landscape.

On the Upper Walk, you have the opportunity to admire the Mbiguá, Adão and Eva, or Bossetti waterfalls from an elevated perspective, until you reach the viewpoint of the second most impressive waterfall in the Park: the San Martín Waterfall.

This walk takes about 60 minutes and is located 300 meters from the Cataratas station. With a total route of 1,750 meters, it is 100% accessible.

The park is open every day of the year, starting at 8:00 AM. Entry is allowed until 3:00 PM, and visitors can stay on the premises until 6:00 PM.
